2009 Roundtable Meeting in Bangkok
The 2009 AQAN Roundtable Meeting, 20-22 March 2009, held at the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok, was co-hosted by ONESQA, SEAMEO-RIHED, and the Commission on Higher Education, Thailand. The meeting was attended by officials from quality assurance agencies and higher education ministries of the AQAN member countries.
The opening ceremony of the meeting had many respected guests including H.E. Narisara Chavaltanpipat, the Deputy Minister of Education who represented the Thai Prime Minister and gave the opening address. In the afternoon session of the first day of the meeting, each AQAN member presented a country report titled: "Assessors: Current Practices and the Next Step". AQAN hopes in the near future to create a body of international assessor; that would be trained and qualified to assess educational institutions throughout the ASEAN region.
On the second day of the meeting, the theme of the meeting was: "Assessors: Looking Forward to Common Practices and Development". From the resulting discussion, it was found that the ASEAN countries share many of the same practices, challenges, successes, and future aspirations. A common set of desirable characteristics were agreed upon for ASEAN Assessors in higher education; a common set of obstacles to achieving the desired quality of QA Assessors were agreed upon as challenges to be overcome.
Finally, the structure of AQAN was formalised. Dato' Dr. Syed Ahmad Hussein, the CEO of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, was elected as Chair of AQAN and his esteemed colleague Prof. Zita Mohd Fahmi was made secretary. Meanwhile, Prof. Somwung Pitiyanuwat, the Director of ONESQA, was elected as the Deputy Chair. An Executive Committee was created consisting of representatives from the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and SEAMEO RIHED. With such rapid progression, AQAN will facilitate the sharing of QA knowledge and take an active role in shaping the region. - Source: IJQAA
